The DVSA refreshes a portion of the theory question bank each spring. The 2026 update is one of the larger ones — here's what's new and what to focus on if you're sitting your test in the next three months.
EV charging and operation
Around 30 new questions cover EV-specific behaviour: regenerative braking, charging etiquette at public chargers, and what to do if you run out of range.
Smart motorways
All-lane-running smart motorways now have a dedicated topic group. Expect questions on red X signage, emergency areas, and what to do if you break down in a live lane.
Low-emission zones
The Clean Air Zone / ULEZ family of restrictions is now testable. You won't need to memorise specific city rules — but you do need to know how to check whether your vehicle complies.
What to revise first
Smart motorways — the biggest single change.
EV regenerative braking — frequently asked, often misunderstood.
CAZ basics — easy marks if you've read the gov.uk page once.
